Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk or wooden spoon
  • Stand mixer with dough hook (optional)
  • Clean kitchen towel
  • Baking dish or sheet pan
  • Pastry brush

Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk around 110°F
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted (plus extra for brushing)
  • 1 large egg room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3 1/2 to 4 cups all-purpose flour

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast:
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Stir gently and let sit for 5–10 minutes until the mixture is foamy.
  • Mix the Dough:
  • Add the melted butter, egg, and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until combined. Gradually add the flour, 1 cup at a time, until a soft dough forms.
  • Knead the Dough:
  • Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Alternatively, use a stand mixer with a dough hook for 5–6 minutes.
  • First Rise:
  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Shape the Rolls:
  • Punch down the dough and divide it into 12–16 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish or sheet pan.
  • Second Rise:
  • Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel and let them rise for another 30–40 minutes, or until puffy.
  • Bake the Rolls:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.
  • Brush with Butter:
  • Remove the rolls from the oven and brush with melted butter while still warm.
