Lo Mein is a beloved Chinese dish featuring soft noodles tossed with stir-fried vegetables, protein, and a flavorful sauce. Whether you’re a fan of chicken, beef, shrimp, or tofu, this recipe is endlessly customizable and comes together in under 30 minutes. Perfect for busy weeknights or casual dining, it’s a crowd-pleaser that’s healthier and fresher than takeout.

      Equipment:

      • Large pot
      • Wok or large skillet
      • Tongs or spatula
      • Small mixing bowl
      • Whisk
      • Measuring cups and spoons

      Ingredients:

      For the Sauce:

      • ¼ cup soy sauce
      • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce
      • 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
      • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
      • 1 teaspoon sugar
      • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
      • 2 cloves garlic, minced

      For the Lo Mein:

      • 8 ounces lo mein noodles (or spaghetti as a substitute)
      • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
      • 1 cup sliced carrots
      • 1 cup bell peppers, sliced
      • 1 cup broccoli florets
      • ½ cup snap peas
      • 1 cup protein of choice (chicken, shrimp, beef, tofu, or pork)
      • 2 green onions, sliced
      • Sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

      Instructions:

      1. Cook the Noodles:
Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the lo mein noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
      2. Prepare the Sauce:
In a small mixing bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, sugar, ginger, and garlic. Set aside.
      3. Cook the Protein:
Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add your chosen protein and cook until fully cooked and golden. Remove from the wok and set aside.
      4. Stir-Fry the Vegetables:
Add the remaining tablespoon of vegetable oil to the wok. Toss in the carrots, bell peppers, broccoli, and snap peas. Stir-fry for 3–4 minutes, until the vegetables are tender but still crisp.
      5. Combine Everything:
Return the cooked protein to the wok and add the cooked noodles. Pour the sauce over the mixture and toss everything together until well-coated and heated through, about 2 minutes.
      6. Garnish and Serve:
Transfer the Lo Mein to serving plates. Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds if desired. Serve hot.

      Tips:

      • Customize your vegetables based on what you have: mushrooms, bok choy, or zucchini work well.
      • For a spicy kick, add a drizzle of sriracha or chili oil to the sauce.
      • Double the sauce for a more richly coated dish.

This Lo Mein recipe is a quick and satisfying way to enjoy a classic dish at home. Packed with fresh ingredients and bursting with flavor, it’s perfect for weeknight dinners or sharing with friends. Skip the takeout and enjoy the homemade goodness!
