Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1.5 cups warm water (around 110°F)
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons) Use high-quality yeast for the best rise and flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • cup baking soda (for the boiling water) Don’t skip the baking soda bath for classic pretzel texture.
Topping Ingredients
  • Coarse salt (for sprinkling)
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter (for brushing)

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
  3. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it doubles in size.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large pot, bring about 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil.
  3. Punch down the dough and divide it into four equal parts. Roll each part into long ropes and cut them into 1-inch pieces.
  4. Boil the dough pieces in the baking soda water for about 30 seconds, then remove and drain on paper towels.
  5. Arrange the pretzel bites on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse salt. Bake for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
  6. Allow to cool slightly before serving with your favorite dips!
