Saltines Recipe

Homemade saltine crackers are light, crispy, and incredibly easy to make with just a few simple pantry ingredients. Perfect for soups, cheese boards, or snacking!

Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter chilled and cubed
  • 1/2 cup water plus more if needed
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • Coarse salt for sprinkling

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling Pin
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Pizza cutter or sharp knife
  • Pastry brush

Method

  1. Preheat the Oven:
  2. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Mix the Dough:
  4. In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt. Add the cubed butter and use your fingers or a pastry cutter to incorporate it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Add Water and Oil:
  6. Gradually add water and oil to the mixture, stirring until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add water 1 teaspoon at a time until it holds together.
  7. Roll Out the Dough:
  8. Divide the dough in half. Roll out one half on a floured surface into a thin, even sheet about 1/8 inch thick. Transfer it to the prepared baking sheet.
  9. Cut the Crackers:
  10. Use a pizza cutter or sharp knife to cut the dough into small squares or rectangles. Poke holes in each cracker with a fork to prevent puffing during baking.
  11. Add Topping:
  12. Lightly brush the crackers with water and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  13. Bake:
  14. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the crackers are golden brown and crisp. Keep a close eye to prevent overbaking.
  15. Cool:
  16. Allow the crackers to cool completely on a wire rack before serving. Repeat with the remaining dough.
