Ingredients

For the Dough
  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast Make sure yeast is fresh.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F) Test temperature for best results.
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Method

Preparation
  1. In a mixing bowl, combine warm water and sugar, stirring gently to dissolve. Sprinkle the active dry yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of flour and salt. Once the yeast mixture is frothy, add it along with melted butter and the egg to the flour mixture.
  3. Gradually add the remaining flour, ½ cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.
  4. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until it has doubled in size.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a smooth ball and place them in a greased baking dish.
  7. Cover the rolls with a kitchen towel again and let them rise for about 15 minutes.
  8. While the rolls are rising, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Once the rolls have risen, bake them in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until they are golden brown on top.
  10. After removing from the oven, brush the tops with melted butter for an extra touch of flavor and shine.

Notes

Check yeast freshness, knead until smooth, and create different shapes like loaves or garlic knots. Store in an airtight container for up to 2 days, or freeze and reheat as needed.
