Ingredients

Dough Ingredients

  • 1 cup water
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 4 large eggs

Cheese and Seasoning Ingredients

  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar, Gruyère, or your favorite) Finely shredded for better melting.
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper Optional
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Optional

Instructions

Prepare the Dough

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a medium saucepan, combine the water, butter, salt, and pepper over medium heat until the butter melts.

Add the Flour

  • Once boiling, remove the saucepan from heat and add the flour all at once. Stir vigorously until the mixture pulls away from the sides of the pan and forms a ball.

Incorporate Eggs

  • Allow the dough to cool slightly before adding the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition until smooth. The dough will be shiny and thick.

Add the Cheese

  • Fold in your shredded cheese and any additional seasonings you desire, mixing until fully incorporated.

Shape the Puffs

  • Using a spoon or a piping bag, drop small mounds of dough (about 1 tablespoon each) onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, leaving space between each puff.

Bake

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed up. Let them cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For best results, ensure that your cheese is finely shredded; it melts better! Don’t open the oven door before the puffs are done to prevent them from collapsing. You can make the dough ahead of time and freeze it to bake later, making it a convenient option whenever snack cravings strike.
