  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 egg
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • ½ tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Sauce:
  • 2 cups marinara sauce store-bought or homemade
  • For the Subs:
  • 4 –6 sub rolls or hoagie buns
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or provolone cheese
  • 2 tbsp butter optional, for toasting
  • Fresh parsley optional, for garnish

Equipment

  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet
  • Large skillet
  • Tongs or spatula
  • Cheese grater
  • Aluminum foil

Method

  1. Prepare the Meatballs:
  2. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  3. In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, Parmesan, egg, garlic, oregano, basil, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined.
  4. Roll the mixture into 1-inch meatballs and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  5. Bake for 15–20 minutes, or until browned and cooked through.
  6. Simmer the Sauce:
  7. While the meatballs bake, heat the marinara sauce in a large skillet over medium heat.
  8. Once the meatballs are done, transfer them to the skillet with the sauce. Simmer for 5–7 minutes to let the flavors meld.
  9. Toast the Rolls:
  10. Preheat your oven's broiler.
  11. Slice the sub rolls and spread a little butter on the insides if desired. Place them under the broiler for 1–2 minutes, until lightly toasted.
  12. Assemble the Subs:
  13. Fill each roll with meatballs and a generous amount of marinara sauce.
  14. Top with shredded cheese and place the assembled subs on a baking sheet.
  15. Broil for 1–2 minutes, just until the cheese melts and starts to bubble.
  16. Serve:
  17. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired and serve the subs hot. Pair with a side of chips, salad, or fries for a complete meal.
