Whip up this traditional Irish Soda Bread in no time! Made with simple ingredients, this rustic bread is perfect with butter, jam, or as a side for hearty stews.

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Knife or bench scraper

Ingredients

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk adjust as needed
  • Optional Add-ins:
  • 1/4 cup sugar for a sweeter bread
  • 1/2 cup raisins or currants
  • 1 tablespoon caraway seeds

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven:
  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly grease it.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients:
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. If using sugar or other dry add-ins, mix them in now.
  • Incorporate Buttermilk:
  • Gradually add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients, stirring with a wooden spoon or spatula until a rough dough forms. Avoid overmixing.
  • Shape the Dough:
  • Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead gently for about 1 minute to bring it together. Shape it into a round loaf, about 1 1/2 inches thick.
  • Score the Top:
  • Place the dough on the prepared baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a deep cross on the top of the loaf. This helps the bread bake evenly and allows it to expand.
  • Bake:
  • Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom.
  • Cool and Serve:
  • Let the bread cool slightly before slicing. Serve warm or at room temperature with butter or your favorite spread.
