Preparation
- Gather all ingredients before you start cooking. Thinly slice the onion and season the ground beef with salt and pepper.
- In a bowl, gently mix the ground beef and shape it into oval patties about 1 inch thick.
Cooking
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the hamburger steaks. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they are nicely browned. Remove them from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions. Cook them over medium heat until they are soft and caramelized, about 8-10 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Once the onions are tender, sprinkle the flour over them and stir to coat. Slowly add the beef broth, scraping the bottom of the skillet to lift the flavorful bits. Bring the mixture to a simmer and allow it to thicken for about 3-4 minutes.
- Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet, spoon the gravy over the top, and let them simmer together for about 5 more minutes to blend the flavors.
- Spoon the hamburger steaks onto plates, add extra gravy, and enjoy your delicious meal!
Notes
For substitutions, you can easily swap ground beef for Halal ground turkey or chicken without sacrificing flavor. Ensure you don’t overcrowd the skillet when browning the patties to achieve that perfect sear. Don't rush the caramelization of the onions; this process adds depth to the gravy. If you have leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to a month. Reheat slowly on the stovetop over medium heat.
