Ingredients

  • Serves 4
  • For the hamburger steaks:
  • 500 g 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion finely diced
  • 1 egg
  • 50 g ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1 –2 tbsp oil or butter for frying
  • For the onion gravy:
  • 1 large onion thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 250 ml 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: ½ tsp Dijon mustard or a splash of cream for depth

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Mixing bowl
  • Spatula or tongs
  • Whisk
  • Knife & cutting board
  • Stove

Method

  1. Make the patties:
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef, diced onion, egg, breadcrumbs, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper.
  3. Form into 4 oval patties.
  4. Sear the steaks:
  5. Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  6. Sear the patties for about 4–5 minutes per side until browned. Remove and set aside (they don’t need to be fully cooked yet).
  7. Prepare the onion gravy:
  8. In the same skillet, melt 2 tbsp butter.
  9. Add sliced onions and cook over medium heat until golden and soft (about 8–10 minutes).
  10. Sprinkle in flour and stir for 1 minute to form a roux.
  11. Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a simmer and cook until thickened (3–4 minutes).
  12. Season with salt, pepper, and mustard/cream if using.
  13. Simmer the patties in gravy:
  14. Return the hamburger steaks to the pan, spoon gravy over them, cover, and simmer on low heat for 10–15 minutes until cooked through.
  15. Serve:
  16. Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles. Spoon plenty of onion gravy over the top.

Notes

Make ahead: Patties and gravy can be made ahead and reheated gently.
Add mushrooms to the gravy for an extra hearty version.
Swap proteins: Try with ground turkey or pork if preferred.
For a Southern twist, serve with buttermilk mashed potatoes or cornbread.
