Prepare the Bread:
Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter on one side of each slice of bread. This will help the bread achieve that golden, crispy texture.
Assemble the Sandwich:
Place one slice of bread butter-side down in the skillet. Layer the cheese slices on top, then cover with the second slice of bread, butter-side up.
Heat the Skillet:
Preheat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium-low heat.
Cook the Sandwich:
Place the sandwich in the skillet. Cook for 3–4 minutes on one side, pressing gently with a spatula, until the bread is golden brown and crispy. Flip the sandwich and cook for another 2–3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the other side is golden.
Serve:
Remove the sandwich from the skillet and let it cool for a minute before slicing it in half. Serve warm, preferably with a bowl of tomato soup or a side of pickles.
