Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a mixing bowl, combine finely chopped walnuts, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon to prepare the filling.
- Layer one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it generously with melted butter. Repeat with four more sheets.
- Sprinkle about 1/4 of the walnut mixture over the layered phyllo.
- Add another two sheets of buttered phyllo, followed by 1/4 of the walnut mixture. Repeat, alternating layers until all filling is used, finishing with a final layer of buttered phyllo.
- Use a sharp knife to cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes.
Baking
- Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
- While baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Heat gently and then remove from heat.
- Once the baklava is out of the oven, pour the honey syrup evenly over it and allow it to soak and cool for a few hours before serving.
Notes
When using phyllo dough, work quickly as it dries out fast; keep it covered with a damp cloth. Feel free to experiment with different nuts like pistachios or almonds for variation.
