Ingredients

Baklava Layers
  • 6 sheets sheets of phyllo dough Make sure it's thawed and ready to use.
  • 1 cup melted butter Keep warm for easy application.
Filling
  • 2 cups finely chopped walnuts
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Syrup
  • 1 cup honey
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine finely chopped walnuts, granulated sugar, and ground cinnamon to prepare the filling.
  3. Layer one sheet of phyllo dough on a clean surface and brush it generously with melted butter. Repeat with four more sheets.
  4. Sprinkle about 1/4 of the walnut mixture over the layered phyllo.
  5. Add another two sheets of buttered phyllo, followed by 1/4 of the walnut mixture. Repeat, alternating layers until all filling is used, finishing with a final layer of buttered phyllo.
  6. Use a sharp knife to cut the assembled baklava into diamond or square shapes.
Baking
  1. Place the tray in the preheated oven and bake for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.
  2. While baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Heat gently and then remove from heat.
  3. Once the baklava is out of the oven, pour the honey syrup evenly over it and allow it to soak and cool for a few hours before serving.

Notes

When using phyllo dough, work quickly as it dries out fast; keep it covered with a damp cloth. Feel free to experiment with different nuts like pistachios or almonds for variation.
