Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a bowl, mix the finely chopped walnuts (or almonds) with ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and set aside.
Layering
- On a clean surface, begin layering the phyllo sheets. Lay down one sheet, brush it generously with melted butter, then add another layer. Repeat this process for about 8 layers.
- Sprinkle approximately ⅓ of the nut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo.
- Repeat the layering process (8 layers of phyllo, then the nut mixture) two more times.
- Finish by topping it off with another 8 sheets of buttered phyllo.
Baking
- Use a sharp knife to cut diamond-shaped pieces in the top layers.
- Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
Syrup Preparation
- While the baklava bakes, combine the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a small pot.
- Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
Serving
- Remove the baklava from the oven, pour the syrup evenly over the hot baklava, and let it cool down.
Notes
Keep phyllo sheets covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out. Experiment with different nuts for unique flavor variations. Avoid overbaking.
