Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 1 package phyllo dough (16 oz) Make sure it's thawed if frozen.
  • 2 cups walnuts (or almonds), finely chopped
  • 1 cup melted butter For brushing between layers.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds warmth and depth to the flavor.
  • ¾ cup sugar For the syrup.
  • 1 cup honey Key ingredient for drizzling.
  • 1 cup water To make the syrup.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Optional, adds extra flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a bowl, mix the finely chopped walnuts (or almonds) with ½ teaspoon of cinnamon and set aside.
Layering
  1. On a clean surface, begin layering the phyllo sheets. Lay down one sheet, brush it generously with melted butter, then add another layer. Repeat this process for about 8 layers.
  2. Sprinkle approximately ⅓ of the nut mixture evenly over the layered phyllo.
  3. Repeat the layering process (8 layers of phyllo, then the nut mixture) two more times.
  4. Finish by topping it off with another 8 sheets of buttered phyllo.
Baking
  1. Use a sharp knife to cut diamond-shaped pieces in the top layers.
  2. Place in the preheated oven and bake for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
Syrup Preparation
  1. While the baklava bakes, combine the sugar, water, honey, and vanilla extract in a small pot.
  2. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and let it simmer for about 10 minutes.
Serving
  1. Remove the baklava from the oven, pour the syrup evenly over the hot baklava, and let it cool down.

Notes

Keep phyllo sheets covered with a damp cloth to prevent them from drying out. Experiment with different nuts for unique flavor variations. Avoid overbaking.
