Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Stand mixer (optional)
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl

Ingredients

  • For the Dough:
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F/43°C
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Garlic Butter:
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough
  • In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
  • Make the Dough
  • Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface (or with a stand mixer) for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  • Shape the Knots
  • Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope, then tie each rope into a knot, tucking the ends under.
  • Bake the Knots
  • Place the knots on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  • Make the Garlic Butter
  • While the knots bake, melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Stir in the minced garlic, parsley, and salt.
  • Brush and Serve
  • Remove the garlic knots from the oven and immediately brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. Serve warm.
