Ingredients

  • For the Dough:
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1 cup warm water 110°F/43°C
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • For the Garlic Butter:
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter melted
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley finely chopped
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Stand mixer (optional)
  • Baking sheet
  • Pastry brush
  • Small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl

Method

  1. Prepare the Dough
  2. In a large mixing bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, until it becomes foamy.
  3. Make the Dough
  4. Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a lightly floured surface (or with a stand mixer) for 5-7 minutes, until smooth and elastic. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a kitchen towel, and let it rise in a warm spot for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  5. Shape the Knots
  6. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a 6-inch rope, then tie each rope into a knot, tucking the ends under.
  7. Bake the Knots
  8. Place the knots on the prepared baking sheet, spacing them about 1 inch apart. Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until they turn golden brown.
  9. Make the Garlic Butter
  10. While the knots bake, melt the butter in a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl. Stir in the minced garlic, parsley, and salt.
  11. Brush and Serve
  12. Remove the garlic knots from the oven and immediately brush them generously with the garlic butter mixture. Serve warm.
