Easy Southern Fried Cabbage: A Comforting Classic

Whip up a quick and flavorful Southern Fried Cabbage with bacon and onion. This comforting classic is a perfect side dish for any meal!

Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 medium head green cabbage cored and chopped
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup chicken broth optional, for extra moisture

Equipment

  • Large skillet or frying pan
  • Wooden spoon or spatula
  • Knife and cutting board
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Cook the Bacon
  2. In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until crispy. Remove the bacon pieces and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.
  3. Sauté Onion and Garlic
  4. Add the chopped onion to the skillet and sauté in the bacon grease until softened, about 3-4 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute.
  5. Cook the Cabbage
  6. Add the chopped cabbage to the skillet. Stir to coat the cabbage in the bacon grease, and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly caramelized (about 10-15 minutes).
  7. Season the Dish
  8. Sprinkle the smoked paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper over the cabbage. Stir well to distribute the seasonings. If the cabbage seems dry, add 1/4 cup of chicken broth and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
  9. Add Bacon and Serve
  10. Return the cooked bacon to the skillet and mix it into the cabbage. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve hot as a side dish or enjoy it as a main course!
