Ingredients

For the rolls
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast (2 ¼ teaspoons)
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg

Method

Preparation
  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 10 minutes until it bubbles up.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine 3 cups of the flour and salt.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter, warm milk, and egg until combined.
  4. Once the yeast is active, pour it into the dry ingredients along with the wet mixture. Carefully mix until a dough begins to form.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining flour onto a clean surface and knead the dough for about 6-8 minutes until it’s smooth and elastic.
  6. Place your dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for approximately 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
  7. After rising, punch the dough down and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball and place them in a greased baking dish.
  8. Cover the rolls again and let them rise for another 30 minutes.
  9. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Bake the rolls for 15-20 minutes until they are golden brown on top.
  10. Allow the rolls to cool slightly, then enjoy them warm—perhaps with a dab of butter!

Notes

For the best results, ensure your yeast is proofed correctly and avoid skipping the first rise for optimal texture. You can use whole wheat flour as a healthier alternative, but it may create a denser roll.
