Ingredients

For the Filling
  • 1 lb ground beef Look for halal-certified ground beef for this delicious dish.
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves Thai basil adds that authentic flavor!
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced Fresh garlic is key for that aromatic depth.
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Adds a savory umami flavor that ties it all together.
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce A great way to enhance the beef's richness—choose a halal version.
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce Provides a distinct flavor profile; ensure it’s halal.
  • 1 teaspoon sugar A touch of sweetness balances the savory ingredients.
For Wrapping and Serving
  • Lettuce leaves for wrapping Lettuce leaves for wrapping Crisp iceberg or romaine works best!
  • Chili sauce for serving Spice it up with your favorite chili sauce.

Method

Preparation
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, add the ground beef. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  2. Stir in the minced garlic and continue cooking for another minute until it's fragrant.
  3. Add the soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, and sugar to the beef. Mix well and allow to simmer for another 3-4 minutes until the flavors meld together.
  4. Remove the skillet from heat and fold in the fresh basil leaves, letting residual heat wilt the basil slightly.
Assembly and Serving
  1. On a plate, lay out the washed lettuce leaves. Spoon about 2-3 tablespoons of the beef mixture into each leaf, then roll it up tightly, tucking in the sides as you go.
  2. Arrange your rolls on a serving platter and offer chili sauce on the side for dipping. Enjoy while fresh!

Notes

For a leaner option, you can use ground turkey or chicken. While lettuce is traditional, you can also use Napa cabbage for a crunchier wrapper. Prep your ingredients beforehand to streamline the cooking process. The beef filling can be made ahead and refrigerated until ready to use. Avoid overcooking the beef to keep it tender.
