  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Divide into two portions.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted Can substitute with halal-friendly margarine.
  • 3 large eggs Ensure at room temperature.
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast This is equivalent to 1 packet.
  • 1 tsp zest of 1 lemon
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
Optional Ingredients
  • colored eggs for decoration Optional for festive presentations.
  • nuts for topping Optional.

Method

Preparation of Yeast
  1. In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mixing the Dough
  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
  2. In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add melted butter, lemon zest, and vanilla extract.
Combining Ingredients
  1. Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the yeast mixture and egg mixture, and stir until a dough begins to form.
Kneading
  1. Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shaping the Dough
  1. Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes, then braid them together, forming a lovely loaf shape.
Second Rise
  1. Place your braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it with the cloth again and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. After the dough has risen, optionally place decorated eggs in the braids or sprinkle with nuts or sprinkles. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Serving
  1. Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy with family or save it for a gathering!

Notes

Store the bread in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze wrapped in plastic for up to 3 months. Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes.
