Ingredients
Method
Preparation of Yeast
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, 1 tablespoon of sugar, and yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
Mixing the Dough
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, remaining sugar, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, beat the eggs and add melted butter, lemon zest, and vanilla extract.
Combining Ingredients
- Create a well in the center of the dry ingredients. Pour in the yeast mixture and egg mixture, and stir until a dough begins to form.
Kneading
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, until smooth and elastic.
First Rise
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a clean cloth, and let it rise in a warm area for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Shaping the Dough
- Punch down the dough and divide it into three equal pieces. Roll each piece into long ropes, then braid them together, forming a lovely loaf shape.
Second Rise
- Place your braided loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Cover it with the cloth again and let it rise for an additional 30 minutes.
Baking
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- After the dough has risen, optionally place decorated eggs in the braids or sprinkle with nuts or sprinkles. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown.
Serving
- Let the bread cool on a wire rack before slicing. Enjoy with family or save it for a gathering!
Notes
Store the bread in an airtight container for up to 3 days. For longer storage, freeze wrapped in plastic for up to 3 months. Reheat in a preheated oven at 350°F for about 10-15 minutes.
