Ingredients

Crouton Ingredients
  • 4 cups sourdough bread, cut into 1-inch cubes Ensure the bread is stale for the best texture.
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (or 2-3 cloves fresh garlic, minced)
  • 1 teaspoon dried herbs (preferably thyme or rosemary)
  • to taste Salt and pepper

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Cut your sourdough bread into 1-inch cubes. They don’t have to be perfect—rustic is the name of the game!
  3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the bread cubes with olive oil, garlic powder, dried herbs, salt, and pepper. Toss well to ensure every piece is evenly coated.
  4. Arrange the seasoned bread cubes in a single layer on a baking sheet. If they overlap, they may not crisp up properly!
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, tossing once halfway through to ensure an even golden-brown crunch. You’ll know they are done when they are beautifully golden and crisp to the bite.
Cooling and Storage
  1. Allow the croutons to cool completely on the baking sheet before using or storing them in an airtight container.

Notes

For best results, avoid large bread cubes to ensure even toasting. Store in an airtight container for up to two weeks or freeze for three months. Reheat in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-10 minutes to regain crispiness.
