Preparation
- Begin by peeling and slicing your large onions into thick rings, aiming for about ½ inch thickness.
- Set up three bowls: one with flour mixed with salt and pepper, another with whisked eggs and buttermilk, and the last with breadcrumbs and shredded cheddar cheese.
- Take each onion ring, dip it in the flour mixture, then in the egg mixture, and finally coat it in the breadcrumb and cheese mixture.
Cooking
- In a large skillet, add enough oil to cover the bottom completely and heat over medium heat until shimmering.
- Carefully place a few coated onion rings into the hot oil and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden-brown.
- Remove the onion rings using a slotted spoon and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve warm, paired with your favorite dipping sauces.
Notes
For a gluten-free version, use almond flour or gluten-free breadcrumbs. To reheat, place leftover onion rings in an oven set to 375°F for about 10 minutes.
