Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with the lemon juice.
- Add 1/2 cup of brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the apples and stir well.
- Transfer the apple mixture into your Dutch oven, spreading it evenly.
- In a separate bowl, mix together rolled oats, flour, remaining 1/2 cup of brown sugar, nutmeg, and melted butter.
- Sprinkle the oat mixture over the apples in the Dutch oven.
Baking
- Cover the Dutch oven and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove the lid and bake for an additional 10 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Serving
- Let it cool slightly before serving. Optionally top with ice cream.
Notes
For the best texture, use a mix of sweet and tart apples. Store covered in the refrigerator for 3-4 days or freeze for up to a month. Reheat at low temperature to retain crispiness.
