Classic Deep Dish Pizza Recipe – A Slice of Comfort

Ingredients
  

  • For the Dough
  • 3 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons instant yeast 1 packet
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/4 cups warm water 110°F
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter melted
  • For the Sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • For the Pizza
  • 3 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup cooked Italian sausage or pepperoni optional
  • 1/2 cup sliced mushrooms bell peppers, or other toppings (optional)
  • Fresh basil for garnish optional

Method
 

  1. Prepare the Dough
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, cornmeal, yeast, sugar, and salt. Gradually add warm water and melted butter.
  3. Mix until the dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Make the Sauce
  6. Heat olive oil in a saucepan over medium heat. Add garlic and sauté until fragrant.
  7. Stir in crushed tomatoes, oregano, basil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Set aside to cool.
  8. Preheat Oven
  9. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  10. Assemble the Pizza
  11. Grease a deep-dish pizza pan or a 9-inch cake pan with butter or olive oil.
  12. Roll out the dough into a large circle and press it into the pan, ensuring the dough goes up the sides to form a crust.
  13. Layer shredded mozzarella on the bottom, followed by cooked sausage, pepperoni, and veggies (if using).
  14. Pour the prepared sauce over the toppings and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  15. Bake the Pizza
  16. Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
  17. Let the pizza cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
