Method
Preparation
- In a large bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- Stir in the salt and gradually add the flour, mixing until a dough forms.
Kneading and Rising
- Transfer the dough to a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until smooth.
- Place the kneaded dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
Shaping and Baking
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Punch down the dough and divide it into equal-sized pieces (around 10-12). Roll each piece into long sticks, about 12 inches in length.
- In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a simmer and add the baking soda carefully. Boil each pretzel stick for about 30 seconds, then remove and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Brush each pretzel stick with the beaten egg for a shiny finish. Bake in the preheated oven for about 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
Topping
- While the pretzels are baking, mix the granulated sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl. Once the pretzel sticks are out of the oven, immediately roll them in the cinnamon sugar mixture.
Notes
If your dough feels too sticky, add a little more flour until it is easier to handle. You can dip these pretzel sticks in chocolate or caramel sauce for an extra treat!
