Prepare the Potatoes
Start by washing the potatoes thoroughly to remove any dirt. Pat them dry with a towel. Pierce each potato several times with a fork or sharp knife to allow steam to escape during grilling.
Season the Potatoes
Rub the potatoes with olive oil to coat them evenly. Sprinkle with salt and pepper, making sure to cover all sides. If you like, you can also add a sprinkle of garlic powder, paprika, or your favorite seasoning blend for extra flavor.
Wrap the Potatoes in Foil
Tear off a piece of aluminum foil large enough to completely wrap each potato. Place a potato in the center of the foil and fold the edges up to seal it. Repeat for all the potatoes.
Preheat the Grill
Preheat your grill to medium heat (about 350°F to 400°F). If you’re using a charcoal grill, arrange the coals on one side for indirect heat, leaving space for the potatoes to cook evenly.
Grill the Potatoes
Place the wrapped potatoes on the grill over indirect heat, away from direct flames. Cover the grill and cook for 40-50 minutes, turning the potatoes every 15 minutes to ensure even cooking. The potatoes are done when they are fork-tender and the skins are crisp.
Check for Doneness
After 40 minutes, check the potatoes by inserting a fork or knife into the center. If it slides in easily, they’re ready to remove from the grill. If not, continue grilling for another 10-15 minutes.
Serve
Once the potatoes are fully cooked, remove them from the grill with tongs. Carefully unwrap the foil (watch out for hot steam). Slice open the potatoes and fluff the insides with a fork. Add your favorite toppings, such as butter, sour cream, cheese, chives, or bacon bits.
