Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 2 cups rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 cup applesauce Can be substituted with mashed bananas.
  • 1/4 cup honey or maple syrup Choose based on preference.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Mix-ins
  • 1/2 cup chopped apples
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans Optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Line an 8×8 inch baking dish with parchment paper or grease it lightly.
  3. In a large bowl, mix the rolled oats, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, blend the applesauce, brown sugar, honey (or maple syrup), and vanilla extract until smooth.
  5. Pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients and gently fold in the chopped apples and nuts (if using).
  6. Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it evenly, pressing down slightly.
Baking
  1. Bake for 25-30 minutes or until golden brown and edges pull away from the sides.
  2. Allow the bars to cool completely, then cut into squares.
Serving
  1. Serve warm for breakfast or a snack, and pack for outings.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days or freeze for up to three months. Reheat in the microwave or oven for best flavor.
