Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 packet instant yeast (2 1/4 teaspoons)
  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm milk and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, sugar, and salt.
  3. Pour the yeast mixture into the flour mixture. Add the melted unsalted butter and egg. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
  6. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball.
  7. Place the shaped rolls on a greased baking tray. Cover and let rise for another 15 minutes.
  8. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  9. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Brush with melted butter as soon as they come out of the oven for that extra layer of softness.

Notes

For a healthier version, try substituting half of the all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour and adjust the liquid accordingly. To help the dough rise in a chilly kitchen, turn your oven on to the lowest setting for a minute, then turn it off and place the dough inside.
