Toad in the Hole is a beloved British classic that’s perfect for family dinners or cozy evenings. Juicy sausages are baked in a rich, golden batter that’s crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. Pair it with onion gravy and vegetables for a hearty, satisfying meal.

      Equipment:

      • 9×13-inch baking dish or roasting pan
      • Whisk
      • Mixing bowls
      • Measuring cups and spoons
      • Oven mitts

      Ingredients:

      • 1 cup all-purpose flour
      • 1 cup milk
      • 3 large eggs
      • ½ teaspoon salt
      • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
      • 8 pork sausages (or your favorite variety)

      Instructions:

      1. Preheat the Oven:
        • Set your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place a 9×13-inch baking dish with the oil inside to heat in the oven while you prepare the batter.
      2. Prepare the Batter:
        • In a mixing bowl, whisk together flour and salt.
        • Gradually add milk and eggs, whisking until the batter is smooth and lump-free. Let the batter rest for 15–20 minutes.
      3. Cook the Sausages:
        • In a hot skillet, lightly brown the sausages over medium heat for about 5 minutes, turning occasionally. This step ensures the sausages are cooked through and flavorful.
      4. Combine in the Baking Dish:
        • Carefully remove the hot dish from the oven. Arrange the sausages evenly in the dish, then pour the batter over them.
      5. Bake:
        • Return the dish to the oven and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the batter is puffed and golden brown. Avoid opening the oven door to prevent the batter from collapsing.
      6. Serve:
        • Slice into portions and serve hot with onion gravy and your choice of vegetables.

      Presentation Ideas:

      • Garnish with fresh parsley for a pop of color.
      • Serve directly from the baking dish to keep the rustic charm.

      Tips:

      • Let the batter rest for the best rise and texture.
      • Preheating the baking dish ensures the batter starts cooking immediately, creating a crispy base.
      • Experiment with flavored sausages like apple or sage for a twist on the classic.
