Sugar cookie icing is a must-have for decorating those sweet, buttery sugar cookies. Whether you’re making cookies for a holiday, special event, or just a fun afternoon baking session, this icing is easy to make and adds the perfect finishing touch. With a smooth texture and vibrant colors, it’s perfect for piping and flooding designs, giving your cookies that professional look. Plus, it hardens to a smooth, glossy finish, making it ideal for stacking cookies without ruining your designs!

      Equipment:

      • Mixing bowl
      • Electric mixer or whisk
      • Measuring spoons
      • Piping bags or squeeze bottles (optional)
      • Food coloring (optional)

      Ingredients:

      • 2 cups powdered sugar
      • 1-2 tablespoons milk (or water)
      • 1 tablespoon light corn syrup
      • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
      • A pinch of salt
      • Food coloring (optional)

      Instructions:

      1. Mix the Ingredients:
In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar, milk (or water), corn syrup, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Mix until smooth and creamy. If you prefer a thicker consistency, add more powdered sugar; for a thinner consistency, add a little more milk.
      2. Adjust Consistency:
If you want a thicker icing for piping outlines or fine details, use less milk. For flooding the cookies with smooth coverage, add more milk to achieve a runnier texture. Adjust the consistency until it’s just right for your needs.
      3. Add Color:
If you’d like to color the icing, divide it into separate bowls and add a few drops of food coloring to each. Mix until the color is evenly distributed. You can use gel food coloring for more vibrant hues.
      4. Decorate the Cookies:
Once your icing is ready, you can use it to decorate your sugar cookies. Place the icing into a piping bag for more detailed designs or use a small spoon to flood the cookies with color. Let the icing dry completely, which can take about 2-3 hours, depending on the thickness of the icing.
      5. Storage:
If you have leftover icing, store it in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. You can also cover it with plastic wrap, pressing it directly onto the surface to prevent it from drying out.

      Presentation Ideas:

      • Pipe intricate designs, outlines, or lettering on top of your sugar cookies for a festive touch.
      • Use different colored icing to create patterns or create a rainbow effect with various colors.
      • Sprinkle edible glitter or colored sugar crystals on the icing for an extra sparkle!

      Tips:

      • For the smoothest icing, sift the powdered sugar before mixing.
      • If your icing starts to harden while decorating, add a few more drops of milk to soften it.
      • Allow the icing to fully dry before stacking cookies to avoid smudging your designs.
      • Try using a small, round piping tip for fine lines and details.
