Sausage gravy is a southern classic that brings rich, savory flavors to breakfast tables everywhere. This creamy, sausage-packed gravy is perfect when served over warm, flaky biscuits, creating a delicious and comforting dish. Whether you’re serving it on a lazy weekend morning or at a family brunch, this easy-to-make sausage gravy recipe will become a staple in your kitchen.

      Equipment:

      • Skillet or large frying pan
      • Wooden spoon or spatula
      • Measuring spoons
      • Ladle or spoon for serving

      Ingredients:

      • 1 pound breakfast sausage (bulk, not in casings)
      • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
      • 2 ½ cups whole milk
      • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
      • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
      • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper (or to taste)
      • Salt to taste
      • Optional: Red pepper flakes for a little heat
      • Biscuits, for serving

      Instructions:

      1. Cook the Sausage
In a large skillet, heat the breakfast sausage over medium heat. Break the sausage up into crumbles with a wooden spoon or spatula as it cooks. Brown the sausage thoroughly, cooking for about 5-7 minutes until it’s no longer pink.
      2. Add the Flour
Once the sausage is cooked, sprinkle the flour over the sausage and stir well to combine. Continue to cook for 1-2 minutes, allowing the flour to cook slightly and thicken the mixture. This creates the base for your gravy.
      3. Add the Milk
Gradually pour in the milk while continuously stirring to prevent lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5-7 minutes or until the gravy thickens to your desired consistency.
      4. Season the Gravy
Add garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt to taste. If you like a little heat, add a pinch of red pepper flakes. Stir to combine and allow the flavors to meld together for another 2-3 minutes.
      5. Serve
Once the gravy has thickened, remove the skillet from the heat. Serve the sausage gravy hot over freshly baked biscuits.

      Presentation Ideas:

      • Serve the sausage gravy generously over a warm biscuit, with a side of scrambled eggs or hashbrowns for a hearty breakfast.
      • Garnish with a sprinkle of fresh herbs, like chopped parsley or chives, for a burst of color.

      Tips:

      • If your gravy is too thick, add a little more milk, a splash at a time, to reach your desired consistency.
      • For a richer flavor, use half-and-half or heavy cream in place of some or all of the milk.
      • If you prefer a leaner version, use turkey sausage or chicken sausage instead of pork sausage.
      • To make this dish ahead of time, prepare the sausage gravy, refrigerate it, and reheat it when you’re ready to serve. Just add a little more milk to loosen the gravy as it reheats.

Sausage gravy is a comforting, delicious dish that’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner. With its creamy texture and savory flavor, it’s a dish that will satisfy the whole family.
