Apple crumble is a warm, comforting dessert that’s perfect for cozy fall evenings. It’s made with simple ingredients like fresh apples, cinnamon, and a buttery crumble topping that adds a satisfying crunch. Whether you enjoy it on its own or with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, this easy-to-make apple crumble is sure to become a favorite in your dessert rotation.

      Ingredients

      For the apple filling:

      • 6 medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp are ideal)
      • 2 tbsp lemon juice
      • ½ cup granulated sugar
      • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
      • ¼ tsp ground nutmeg
      • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour

      For the crumble topping:

      • 1 cup all-purpose flour
      • ¾ cup old-fashioned rolled oats
      • ¾ cup packed brown sugar
      • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
      • ¼ tsp salt
      • ½ cup unsalted butter, cold and cut into cubes

      Equipment

      • 9×9-inch baking dish (or similar)
      • Mixing bowls
      • Knife and cutting board
      • Pastry cutter or fork
      • Spoon

      Instructions

      1. Preheat the oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
      2. Prepare the apple filling:
Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour until evenly coated. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
      3. Make the crumble topping:
In a separate bowl, combine the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Add the cold, cubed butter. Using a pastry cutter, fork, or your fingers, cut the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. The pieces of butter should be pea-sized.
      4. Assemble the crumble:
Evenly sprinkle the crumble topping over the apple filling, covering it as completely as possible.
      5. Bake:
Bake the apple crumble in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling and tender.
      6. Serve:
Let the apple crumble cool for 10-15 minutes before serving. It’s best enjoyed warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

      Tips

      • Apple variety: Mix tart apples (like Granny Smith) with sweet apples (like Honeycrisp) for a well-balanced flavor.
      • Make it ahead: You can prepare the apple filling and crumble topping in advance and store them separately in the fridge. Assemble and bake when ready to serve.
      • Extra flavor: Add a handful of chopped nuts (like pecans or walnuts) to the crumble topping for added crunch and flavor.
      • Spices: Adjust the spices to your liking; a pinch of cloves or ginger can give the crumble an extra warm kick.
